Women’s Mental Health

As a perinatal psychiatrist, I understand the unique challenges women face through different stages in life. Hormonal transitions, pregnancy, the postnatal period, fertility treatment, pregnancy loss, perimenopause and menopause can have a significant impact on emotional well-being. These experiences can contribute conditions such as anxiety, depression, obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), trauma related disorders and mood disorders, or may worsen pre-existing mental health conditions.

I provide comprehensive, evidence based psychiatric assessments and personalised treatment with a holistic approach. Your treatment plan will include psychological treatment recommendations, lifestyle advice and recommendations for medication - if indicated.

I believe in some cases, medication can have an important role in managing your symptoms alongside lifestyle changes and psychological therapy.

Preconception Planning

Planning a pregnancy is an important opportunity to optimise your mental health and discuss any potential risks and treatment options before conception. Preconception counselling is suitable for women with current or previous mental health difficulties, those taking psychiatric medication, or anyone seeking specialist advice about mental wellbeing before pregnancy. I would strongly recommend this appointment for women with a history of a severe mood disorder such as bipolar affective disorder, severe depression or psychosis.

During the consultation, we will review your psychiatric and medical history, current mental health, medications, previous pregnancies and individual risk factors. We will discuss the benefits and potential risks of continuing, changing or stopping medication, the likelihood of relapse during pregnancy and after birth, and strategies to support your mental wellbeing throughout your pregnancy and after birth.

Following the appointment, you will receive personalised recommendations, and with your consent, a summary letter can be shared with your GP or other healthcare professionals involved in your care. My goal is to support informed decision making and help you enter pregnancy with the best possible plan for keeping you well.

Fees

I believe in providing clear and transparent pricing so you know what to expect before your appointment. Fees reflect the time spent during your consultation, preparation beforehand, review of relevant information, and the completion of a clinical letter summarising the assessment and treatment plan, which is shared with you and, with your consent, your GP or referrer.
